Kiggins Sign from Afar and Close-Up

Come back Friday to see the full video.

We’re starting something new here at

In the coming weeks and months, this website will become much more than you see today. As our founder, David Madore says, we’re “in the process of being invented.”

Our COUV.COM Originals are the first of many new programs we will be rolling out in the coming weeks.

What are they? Video stories about you, the people of Clark County.

We’ll have one new story every week. They’ll be announced on Mondays and released on Fridays with updates throughout the week.

We invite the community to give us feedback, ideas and tips by interacting with us on the website or sending an e-mail to us at

Without further ado, we’d like to introduce our first Original: The New Kiggins Theatre.

Kiggins holds a special place in many a heart in Clark County. The downtown Vancouver establishment first opened its doors in 1936.

“A lot of people saw their first movies here. They can tell me the movies or they can tell me their first date or their grandparents first date here,” theater owner Bill Leigh said during a recent interview.

Leigh had trouble finding a tenant to run the theater after the previous one left in May of last year, so he decided to renovate and run the place himself.

The venue’s popularity led community members to join the renovation effort through work parties that Leigh advertises on Facebook.

Leigh’s hoping the nostalgic appeal and a new gimmick (selling pizza and beer) will bring new life to the old building when it reopens this summer.

We’re working with Leigh to help document the renovation process.

Check back on Friday to see our first video.
