Children are not “mini-you’s.”

Summary: Family Life counselor Diane Moore explains why the character trait of discretion is so important to instill in your children. If children were “mini-you’s,” parenting would be so much easier because children would automatically understand what parents are trying to communicate.

Parent Talk Tip: Parents need the character trait of discretion to be able to discern what to say and how to say it. Discretion is recognizing and avoiding words, actions and attitudes that bring undesirable consequences.

Diane Moore is a certified family life counselor and parent mentor with her own private practice in Vancouver. Her radio talk show, Parent Talk, Is heard in Portland, Vancouver and Boise. Today’s tip comes from a conversation between Diane and one of the show’s callers. It has been edited for time.
