The Share House located near downtown Vancouver provides hot meals and a place to sleep for the homeless. There are many opportunities for people and organizations to help. The Veterans court is one local group that participates in preparing and serving meals once a month along with providing entertainment by local artist.
Judge Darvin J. Zimmerman is the Founding Judge of Veterans Court and provides direction and leadership. We caught up with him while preparing to serve meals at the Share House to ask him what the Veterans Court is all about. Focusing on veterans facing misdemeanor criminal charges, Veterans Court provides alternative treatment and sentencing options for defendants suffering from substance abuse or mental illness. To help guide veterans through the program there is a team of professionals from court staff, law enforcement, peer mentors, and the VA hospital.
