Amidst very tough economic times an Orchards restaurant is thriving by serving up comfort food with a little southern flavor stashed in the spices. With its beginnings on the side of the road as a food stand, Charlie and his wife Goldie now operate Goldies BBQ at 15640 NE Fourth Plain as a full-fledged restaurant.

Their humble beginnings, as a road side food stand, began over three decades ago with Texas style barbeque that takes a turn through Louisiana to pick up some comfort food. On Saturday Goldies BBQ serves its lip smacking delights with a full line-up of entertainment to benefit the Clark County Veterans Therapeutic Court.

Headliners include Ernesto Quilban, an internationally acclaimed classical guitarist, Teddy Patrick, the Voice of Costco, a national fiddler champion, dancers and singers. The entertainers perform from noon to 10 p.m., Saturday, Apr. 28.

The Clark County Veterans Therapeutic Court, with Judge Darvin Zimmerman presiding, assists veterans who face challenges as a result of combat-related trauma and as a consequence have entered the criminal justice system for low-level offenses. According to the Department of Defense, approximately 1.7 million American soldiers have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and one in five has returned with a mental health issue. War-related illnesses contribute to escalated suicide attempts, arrests, incarceration, divorce, domestic violence, homelessness and despair. The court’s specialized treatment program helps address those issues.

“We have a long and successful history of operating therapeutic courts in Clark County, and I can’t think of a more deserving group to help than those who have served our country,” says Judge Zimmerman.

Event proceeds will support and sustain the Veterans Therapeutic Court, court participants and court volunteers.
