The Vancouver City Council and the Clark County Board of Commissioners agreed to designate Mar. 21 as the inaugural breast reconstruction rights awareness day or BRAVE Day. The joint proclamations highlight an effort to elevate patients’ rights when faced with cancer-related mastectomy.

Dr. Allen Gabriel, founder of the the Pink Lemonade Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the well-being of breast cancer survivors, appeared before the two boards. His goal is to provide educational and support opportunities that offer hope and healing for the mind, body and spirit of cancer victims.

Wear pink on March 21

Gabriel encourages everyone to show their support by wearing pink on Mar. 21. “Our goal is to bring attention to the advocacy efforts that are needed to counteract the lack of meaningful legislation targeting breast reconstruction rights,” says Gabriel.

According to Dr. Gabriel the color pink will make its way across America. Pilots for Alaska Airlines, as well as flight attendants and customer service agents, will wear pink BRAVE Day bracelets on all U.S. flights. Large “BRAVE Day” banners will hang near check-in counters in airline hub cities that serve Alaska Airlines, such as Seattle, Portland, Ore.; Los Angeles Calif. and Anchorage, Alaska.
