Vancouver business owner Tom McCloud

Tom McCloud, owner of PIP Printing, noticed city workers and a Qwest/Century Link crew on Main Street in downtown Vancouver, according to a phone message left July 11.

He wondered why Main Street, between 11th and 12th – where his business is located – was closed. The closure impeded vehicular access to his business and he was frustrated.

He walked out and approached the workers, asking, “What’s going on?”

According to McCloud’s phone message, the construction workers said they were “putting in a new manhole to support light rail.” McCloud also says the Qwest workers told him they have “three years of work to re-route for light rail.”

McCloud believes that light rail is a foregone conclusion. He states in his phone message, “Our vote – if we ever get a vote – probably’s not going to mean anything.”

TRANSCRIPT
Good morning, David. My name is Tom McCloud. I own PIP Printing in Vancouver, downtown next to the old Kiggins Theater.

I just went out and talked with some construction people that are working on downtown Main Street. The street’s shut down between 11th and 12th. And I said, “What’s going on?”

He said, “Oh, we’re putting in a new manhole to support light rail. And then I asked one of the Qwest guys, I said, “What are you guys doing?” He said, “Oh, we’ve got three year’s worth of work to re-route stuff for light rail.”

So, David, it sounds like to me that that’s a foregone decision that’s been made, that light rail is coming. Our vote— if we ever get a vote — probably’s not going to mean anything. But I think that it’s a…I just wanted you to know. I heard your name yesterday on Kremer and Abrams show about your Forensic Accountant, and I applaud what you’re trying to do.

Thank you, sir.
